Mrs Georgiou is Head of House
At the end of the Autumn Term 140 students in Amazon were invited to celebrate their achievements for the term by attending a film of their choice. The film, chosen by the House leaders, was Toy Story 3. These 140 students had all achieved over 130 points net; and all had less than 3 behaviour points. The stars of Amazon on this occasion were Zak Georgiou who achieved a brilliant 244 points, Louise Ackers with 227, Mollly Stokes with 224, Ben Reilly with 202 and Milu Ahmed with 200. In addition Shana Heylen, Caira Lorenzo, Rashida Begum, Dexter Bergmann and Joshua Clegg all achieved over 190 points. The winning tutor group with the most points overall was G12.
Amazon House Leaders, along with leaders from the other five houses, attended a training day on 15 December. This was to enable them to develop their leadership skills further, to be able to lead conversations and activities. It also gave them the opportunity to specialise in a particular area, by attending a workshop of their choice. Possible workshops included “in the news”, Diversity and Olympic Challenge. They were presented with their House Leader badges on the day and it is lovely to see so many of them wearing these with pride. Amazon is privileged to have so many excellent leaders and I am sure they will go from strength to strength.
On Friday, 21 January Amazon House celebrated through a “Sunshine” assembly where students changed seats with others celebrating for the same reason as them; eg all those who had achieved 95% attendance or better had to stand up and swap seats.
AMAZON CHARITIES
After much discussion the Amazon House Leaders decided to support two charities with the monies raised from the “own clothes day” in December which was £154. This, together with a donation of £32.70, was split equally between St Wilfred’s and Chestnut Tree House Hospices. In addition Amazon House decided to support St Martin’s Day Centre for the homeless, a charity suggested by Alhana Danaher. All students and staff were invited to bring in a tin or packet of non-perishable food. Each tutor group made up their own box. Many tutor groups decorated their boxes with a Christmas theme. One box even had a fleece blanket included in it! These were then delivered directly to St Martin’s on the last day of term and were very gratefully received. The House Leaders have decided that these three charities will continue to be supported by Amazon. Any money raised in the future is to be divided between St Wilfred’s and Chestnut Tree House. addition we aim to make up boxes for St Martin’s on a termly basis so please save your tins etc for our Easter collection.
OLYMPIC CHALLENGE NO 3.
The winners in Amazon for the third Olympic Challenge were G10. The challenge was to design an alternative use for the Arena, drawing a plan, making a model and presenting the final ideas. G10 came up with the idea of 2 indoor mazes and a skate ramp. They designed it to be “green”: environmentally friendly and sustainable. Second place went to G7 for their ski resort idea and third was G13 with their indoor laser game facility. Unfortunately, our House did not achieve a medal place this time but I am sure all our tutor groups will rise to the next challenge – watch this space!
AMAZON GET TOGETHERS
We invited all Year 7 and their parents to attend an informal social event on 10 December. This was well attended and the mince pies, tea, coffee, hot chocolate and squash disappeared quite nicely! It was a lovely opportunity to meet everyone in an informal setting and positive feedback was received from parents and students alike. We plan to continue this initiative with further Amazon “get togethers”. We therefore would like to invite Year 8 students and their parents to our next such event on Friday, 11 February from 3.10 pm for about one hour. Light refreshments will be served. We do hope you can all come.
AMAZON RISE TO THE CHALLENGE
Amazon achieved a Silver award in the first Olympic Challenge and a Bronze award in the second.
The first challenge was to design a costume, using at least 50% newspaper, which reflected the “house” as well as the Olympic values. G12 rose to this challenge by designing a suit for an explorer who entered the jungle (the trees being other members of the tutor group) to find the elusive “G12”, a rare creature indeed. This creative and imaginative idea won the silver award overall.
The second challenge was to create a product which can enhance sporting performance using science and technology and to design a poster to promote the product. The entry put forward by Amazon was a pair of amazing multifunctional ski goggles that included features like head lights to improve light intensity, headphones to calm pre-event nerves, windscreen wipers to clear snow which blocks vision and a built in satellite navigation system to show the skier where to go! This amazing entry came from G10 and gained a bronze award.
AMAZON LEADERS LEAD THE WAY
The Amazon House Leaders have taken the lead in a real sense, running their own house leader meetings and simply feeding back their ideas and results of their discussions to the staff in the house team. Well done to all the Amazon leaders but particularly to the senior house leaders who want to take on this responsibility. Kat Hampton and Hannah Fox are pioneering this initiative, guiding the younger house leaders ready for when they take over.
