Bognor Regis Community College was in the privileged position of being the one-school pathfinder “Building Schools for the Future” project in West Sussex. It is unique in the Authority in being fully rebuilt and developed in a way that will lead learning for students both within and beyond the school. The total cost of the programme is £39million.

This project presented a once in a lifetime opportunity to create a school in which 1,800 young people discover their talents. It has the added benefits of linking to an entirely new primary school on the campus, of extending learning opportunities for adults, and of complementing the outstanding facilities in the Arena Skills and Sports Centre.

The school is united on one site and has addressed key issues such as curriculum content, the structure of the school day, vertical tutoring, support for families, and a change to the uniform. There is a new look and a new feel to the school.

Our school reflects high quality design and sustainable principles. Designed over four levels and with two atria it is an imposing edifice. A light, welcoming reception area leads to the Library as the central service for learning and research. State of the art technology is prominent through digital screenage, wireless access, cashless facilities, interactive whiteboards, multi-media facilities and video conferencing. The richness of this provision will serve to further personalise learning and to support virtual learning in any context.

Spaces reflect the diversity of our curriculum and the flexibility that it needed to support change and innovation. Activities have driven the design process … we at last have a dedicated dining area, a hall to sit 300 with a high quality projection facility, large open classrooms (some double the conventional sizes), a lecture theatre capable of seating 50, two dance/drama studios, fantastic music facilities, arts rooms with views to the coast and the downs, toilets that respect privacy, a suite of smaller rooms to support the full range of special needs, a dedicated Sixth Form Centre, and a full height gymnasium to host top level trampolining competitions.

We sought not just to renew a range of classrooms but to create an environment that lifts the spirits as you enter it and says to every learner we value you and want you to aspire to great things within your new school … to be proud to belong and proud to achieve. The new building and its grounds provides a much safer environment for our students, and this is extended to the approaches with the access road remodelled, and priority given to pedestrians and cyclists.

The new school is an integral part of the regeneration of Bognor Regis: its facilities will be available to the community throughout the year. We hope to develop further integrated services on the campus in support of children and families: the new school is a landmark and a hub for the area.
