In Years 7 - 9 two languages are currently taught at The Regis School – French and German.

French is taught in sets in Year 7, through a communicative approach. Top set students embark on the GCSE French syllabus in Year 7, with a view to completing the GCSE in Year 9. Set 2 students in Year 7 embark on NVQ French and aim to complete Level 1, at least, by the end of Year 9. The medium of teaching is predominantly French to enable students to learn standard phrases rapidly and to develop listening skills.

We aim to run a trip to France for Years 7 & 8 students in the Summer term and we encourage students to participate in this as it offers a unique cultural experience and opportunities to use French in real-life situations.

In Year 8 all students are currently taught in mixed ability sets for French and also commence their studies of German. Year 9 sees all students continue to study both French and German in mixed ability sets.

At the end of Year 9 students are encouraged to continue their studies of French or German at GCSE level and, additionally, have the option of studying Spanish to NVQ Level 2. Sixth Form students are encouraged to opt for French A’ Level.
