Pupils celebrate music service anniversary
On 16th and 17th February, pupils at The Regis School joined musicians and singers from across the county to perform in two concerts at the Chichester Festival Theatre to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the West Sussex Music Service. Our pupils performed with the County Youth Wind Orchestra and Chichester Youth Concert Band who were joined by many ensembles from across West Sussex who rehearsed throughout the day for the evening performances. The music performed was varied, ranging from a Lion King medley to Classical Sinfoniettas and rock songs.
The concerts were a huge success and highly enjoyable for both performers and the audience. Jess Butcher, year 11 says ‘It was a great opportunity to perform at the Festival Theatre and to join up with other musicians from different bands and schools’. Congratulations to the music service and to Jess Butcher, Amelia Sowry, Lauren Sells, Daniel Morris and Patrick Smart who all took part in the festivities.
Performing Arts Showcase
On March 23rd, pupils from all year groups presented the second annual Performing Arts Showcase. This opportunity is given to pupils who have excelled in their music, dance or drama studies during the academic year, who are invited to perform their best pieces of performance work to an audience of teachers and parents.
The evening included a wide range of performances; including ‘A’ level theatre studies pieces, GCSE dance work, musicians ranging from classical flute to the Glee club and a selection of dance and drama from extra-curricular clubs. Over 40 pupils were involved in the evening and all showed exceptional talent through well rehearsed and polished pieces. The showcase was a real success and very much enjoyed by the performers, audience and teachers involved; and we look forward to seeing more of this talent in the future.
About Us
The Creative Arts Faculty at The Regis School is a thriving community of six subject areas and twelve specialist teachers (art, photography, music, drama, dance and media studies). With a focus on creative and independent learning, pupils at The Regis School are encouraged to explore all areas of the arts whilst learning the specific skills each area offers. The state of the art facilities at The Regis Schools offers a wealth of opportunities for the creative arts to thrive, enabling pupils to access the very best in learning and teaching in these subject areas.
Creative arts in Year 7 , 8 and 9
At key stage three pupils study art, music, drama and dance, and media studies. Learning is focused on providing the opportunity for pupils to be creative in a supportive environment whilst learning the basic skills which can be developed for further study at key stage four. Pupils are encouraged to become involved in the exciting and varied extra-curricular opportunities which are provided, including a wide variety of performances both internally and externally. Performance opportunities are also provided as part of the curriculum, with pupils at key stage three engaging in inter-tutor singing and dance competitions, which provide the opportunity for able pupils to share their talents.
Creative arts in Year 10 and 11
At key stage 4 pupils are currently offered the opportunity to study art, photography, media studies, theatre studies, dance and music GCSE and BTEC Popular Music. Art and photography GCSE exam results are excellent, and pupils studying all subjects aspire to achieve high standards, often committing additional time to improving work and performances for final examination and exhibition pieces. Learning is supported through detailed feedback from teachers throughout all courses, and regular contact with home is established by teachers to discuss learning strategies with parents and carers. Pupils at The Regis School are enabled and encouraged to develop their skills and realise their potential in the creative arts subjects and they often find that a higher level of creative expression can enable them to become more confident and independent as individuals.
Creative arts in AS and A Level
In the sixth form, students are offered the opportunity to study art, photography, media studies and theatre studies at AS and A levels, and BTEC popular music (award and certificate). The music BTEC provides the opportunity for pupils to study a vocational music course which focuses on the music industry, and this has been a very successful course for pupils at The Regis School. Small groups for tuition provide the opportunity for very detailed teacher guidance and all sixth formers have access to our state of the art facilities including Mac suites, the recording studio and purpose built rehearsal spaces. Learning is enriched by opportunities for performances, trips and visits and the faculty has close links with university and AIM HIGH which enable students to learn about post 18 opportunities.
Student voice
Students are regularly encouraged to enter into dialogue with teachers about their learning and student voice is a steadily developing area in 2010-2011. Student voice interviews with staff have provided valuable opportunities for pupils to give appropriate and productive feedback about the curriculum and the extra-curricular opportunities which they want to become involved in at The Regis School, and this is fully supported by the staff in the faculty. The establishment of Creative Arts student leaders is planned to provide continuous opportunities for students to have a voice about the faculty and to take responsibility for its development.
