It’s All Peace and Serenity

With Molly Double accepting her prize money of fifty pounds for her winning entry to represent The Regis School in The Lions Club International Peace Poster contest. Bailey Pattern’s Manga scene was rewarded in second place from over ninety entries submitted by budding creatives from year seven and eight. The standard was so very high that The Lions Club issued certificates of appreciation to Emily Charman, Charlotte Colwell, Beth Terris, Alex Pollard, Brandon Robinson, Holly Laatz, Jessica O’Connor, Ellie Canter, Joe Stead, Peter Lambert, Louise Chaffer and Liam Vass.

It was very difficult for the judging panel to pick one poster but in the end the overwhelming innocence and sense of happiness in Molly’s picnic scene pulled at the heart strings of The Lions Club who came into the art department to view the work. Miss Double’s entry will now go onto the next stage in the competition at a national level so fingers crossed that she makes it to the international level!

Your child will already have made links with the college art department through our transition portrait project and the family of schools exhibition. We value these events as both opportunities for us to get to know your child and to recognise the art experiences that they have prior to joining us in Year 7. In Years 7 - 9 we are central to the key National Curriculum core value of creativity. We strongly believe in giving children the chance to explore and enjoy a whole range of techniques using both traditional and new media. Content is underpinned with a critical and cultural understanding to encourage a life time appreciation of art in our local area and the world around us past and present.

Art is a popular option in Years 10 and 11. At GCSE level students take even more responsibility for their learning and embrace the opportunity of expressing their ideas through many different approaches. In 2008, a Regis School GCSE Art and Design candidate was placed in the top ten nationally from an entry of over 36,000 students. Pupils enjoy seeing the excellent standard of art and photography in the sixth form as students are encouraged to work in the art rooms throughout the day. The work at ‘A’ Level is ambitious and inspiring. Emphasis is on personal development and therefore a wide variety of content and skill is seen.

The art department has excellent facilities, including a vast open plan working space, a classroom, a balcony and a quiet study/library area. Pupils are actively encouraged to use the facilities after school hours to develop their skills and creativity, and a number of teacher-led after school activities are run to provide opportunities for pupils to learn a vast range of skills and artistic techniques.

Art is displayed around the whole school as well as in classrooms. We also have an annual exhibition of exam work which is open to the whole community. Work is often requested for display within the county and for national events. We value the importance of seeing art for real and trips are organised to a range of venues as well as inviting practising artists in to work with pupils.
