At The Regis School, pupils have media studies lessons in Year 9, and it is a popular and rapidly expanding option at GCSE, BTEC and A level. It aims to equip students with the skills and knowledge they will need for life in the information economy. Students learn about a wide range of media industries including, film, television, advertising, magazines and newspapers. Increasingly, much of our learning focuses on how new media technologies, especially the internet, are changing the media landscape.

We have excellent facilities for Media Studies, with two dedicated MAC suites. In lessons students learn how to use industry standard software packages like Photoshop and Indesign in conjunction with digital cameras and digital video cameras. Our approach to teaching is hands on. We encourage students to use digital technology to express their creativity, and we aim to teach theoretical ideas through practical work.

In year 9, pupils study an animation project, planning and creating their own animation using state of the art filming and editing facilities. The emphasis is on creativity and teamwork, and pupils learn the planning and production media processes as well as the skills for creating their own animated film.

In years 10 and 11, pupils can opt to take either the GCSE or the BTEC course. Both courses are highly practical, and the pupils create their own digital and print media pieces in response to a range of briefs. The facilities are available for pupils to continue work on their creative media pieces at lunchtimes and after school.

We also offer an exciting programme of extra-curricular opportunities for our pupils. Every year we take part in the BBC’s ‘School Report’ project. This gives Years 10 and 11 students the opportunity to make news reports about issues that matter to them. On School Report Day we link up with the BBC and publish our reports both through the school and the BBC website. The 6th Form Media students run a film club, and invite students from all year groups to watch, discuss and review movies with special events and competitions throughout the year.
