Music
The music department at The Regis School is vast, with two MAC suites, four practice rooms, two ensemble rooms and an industry standard recording studio. All of the practice facilities are fully equipped with a range of instruments and PA systems which pupils can use to rehearse as an individual or as a band and these rooms are available for all pupils to use at lunchtimes and after school.
In Year 7, 8 and 9 pupils receive music lessons and the focus is on performance skills and using MAC technology to compose and edit musical pieces. Creativity is encouraged through the exploration of sound and pupils learn about a range of musical styles through the performing and composing work. Pupils can choose to work individually or as part of a group to perform and create pieces on instruments of their choosing, and a range of recording options are available so that pupils can record, share and evaluate their practical work. We encourage pupils to use and share their musical compositions in other lessons, for example, pupils can compose music to use for their animations in media studies lessons or dance and drama performances.
Pupils can opt to study music BTEC in years 10 and 11, achieving the equivalent qualification to 2 GCSEs. The vast range of facilities enables pupils to work independently on a wide range of musical activities and they can choose to study performance, composition or a combination of both for the BTEC course. All pupils are taught how to use the state of the art recording studio and a music technology pathway may be taken if this is of interest. Pupils who study music in year 10 and 11 are encouraged to participate in a range of performance opportunities such as performing in assemblies and at the annual Big Sing.
Pupils can choose to continue their musical studies in the sixth form at The Regis School. Achieving ‘Outstanding’ results according to the National ALPS scale (2009, 2010), the sixth form BTEC course extends pupils’ musical skills and allows them to engage in higher levels of analytical work, higher standards of performance and a wide range of independent learning opportunities. The annual musical show ‘Musicality’ is put on by the sixth form music pupils, providing them with the chance to experience the business and promotion side of the industry in addition to the performance aspects.
There is a range of extra-curricular activities which pupils at The Regis School can become involved in. The Glee Club frequently perform in whole school and performing arts events and has become established as a pupil led ensemble with teacher support. The school band is teacher led and provides accompaniment for school shows as well as performing in showcase performances. Pupils often form their own bands and they are able to rehearse at lunchtimes and after school in a supportive environment. We are proud to be able to support our pupils in developing their own musical voice within the Bognor Regis community.
