Geography

Some people believe Geography is just about maps and finding your way around! Useful as this is, this is just a very small part of what Geography is. Geography is all-around us and is about everything that happens on the planet that we call Earth – and are privileged to call, Our Home!

Geographers are very concerned about the natural world. Everybody is now talking about Global Warming – but geographers were talking and teaching about the changing climate back in the early 1980’s, long before it was a hot political issue. How much less serious would the situation be mow if people had listened then! Geographers care about the environment, about the damage people cause through pollution and from the ways in which humans are affecting the natural systems like water, the forests of the world, and the oceans. We are concerned with the threats which nature poses to people – like earthquakes, flooding and hurricanes, and how we can manage natural disasters to reduce the loss of life and the economic costs natural hazards.

But Geography is also about people themselves: where they live in cities and the countryside. Its about their housing and urban environment, their transport and their jobs. It’s also about their fun too...holidays, recreation, sport and peoples’ quality of life wherever in the world they may be. There are many key questions that are central to geography. Why do we have ‘rich and poor’ countries? Why do people in some regions live into their 80’s and beyond, yet in other areas they can rarely expect to live until they are 40? Can we feed all the people in the world...and what is happening to the world’s population? These are some of the key questions and issues that Geography is really about...and there are many more besides!

Our course at TRS focuses on these topics – and all of them key to understanding our world and making us informed and caring citizens who can take a real part in shaping the future.

Geography at TRS includes a lot of chances to visit places and study real world situations. Some of the recent trips have included:

  • Natural History Museum (Yr9)
  • Marwell Zoo (Yr8)
  • London Docklands (yr10)
  • Chichester Harbour (Yr11)
  • Swanage (5 days residential – Yr 12)
  • New York –next Easter (yr 12)

Geography is about our world and every living thing on it – now and in the future.
