Years 7, 8 and 9 has a curriculum designed to a specific age and ability group. This starts initially in year 7 with basic skills that can be used in physical activity through to the development of strategic systems of play to be used in specific sports and activities in year 9.
When pupils reach year 9, the curriculum is more tailored to the individual learner. Each student can choose a pathway through the year making independent choices on activities that enjoy, this enables the pupil to personalise their learning to suit their needs. The curriculum has been developed from the realisation that some pupils’ personalities and characteristics lend themselves more towards team sports or activities, where as some are perform better within individual sports or activities.

There are a number of options in Physical Education in years 10 and 11 at The Regis School. Within core P.E. lessons and examinable P.E blocks we currently offer the following courses; QVC (Gym Instructors Training), Junior Sports Leaders, Sports Performance and Coaching single P.E. GCSE, double P.E GCSE, BTEC First Certificate in Sport and Btec in Outdoor Education.
Core P.E at The Regis School:
Within our core P.E, a personalised route way is available to the pupils to increase the amount of qualifications gained when leaving the school. The personalised route way includes:
- Btec exam qualification
- Sports coaching
- Fitness development
- Leadership
GCSE P.E at The Regis School:
Due to the new specification it allows pupils to be assessed on other aspects of P.E. rather than just their physical ability. As part of their 60% practical mark they can be assessed on the following areas; player/performer, organiser, leader/coach, choreographer and official. At The Regis School we run both single GCSE and double GCSE which both consist of the following;
Unit 1 – Examination 40% - Unit 1 is externally assessed through a written examination paper of 1 hour and 30 minutes. This will contribute a maximum of 40% towards your total marks.
Unit 2 – Controlled Assessment 60% - Unit 2 is assessed in two sections. Section 1 – four practical performances in the role of either player/participant, leader or official. You can achieve 48% of the marks from your four performances, two of which may be in the role of a leader or official. Section 2 – analysis of performance in one of the chosen activities. This will be worth 12% of the marks and should include planning, performing and evaluating a Personal Exercise Programme.
The double GCSE is the same as the above but they have an additional exam and they have to be assessed in 8 activity areas as opposed to the four.
Btec First Certificate in Sport:
The qualification will give you the knowledge, understanding and competency needed when considering entering employment in the sport sector. You will gain a grounding in the essential skills and broad fundamentals crucial to this area of study, giving you the opportunity to build on these afterwards by undertaking another Level 2 qualification, or to enter into your first job within this sector. The qualification is designed to enable you to study other subjects alongside your BTEC First Certificate.
The qualification consists of at least one core unit plus a choice of specialist units totalling 180 guided learning hours. Units taken are 100% course work based and there is no exam, over the two year pupils will take part in three units; Body in Sport, Health and Safety and Practical Sport.
Each unit is marked with one of four grades, these grades are dependant on the depth of research and knowledge put into the coursework assignments. The four possible grades to achieve are:
- Not Yet Passed
- Pass – equivalent to 2 C’s at GCSE
- Merit – equivalent to 2 B’s at GCSE
- Distinction – equivalent to 2 A’s at GCSE
The outstanding facilities of the college are enjoyed by all our pupils, including significant use of the Swimming pool and Arena facilities.
